Remember the time Richard Hammond crashed in 2006 and was traveling upwards of 200 mph upside down in a jet car?

Total insanity that he got out of that unscathed. Thank you roll cage for saving Hammonds life.

I wouldn’t call being in a coma for two weeks and suffering brain damage being unscathed. The car held up amazingly well though.

I don’t know if I’d quite call it unscathed...

He has permanent brain damage

Yeah he didn’t exactly get out of that unscathed. That crash fucked him up. Though if the roll cage wasn’t as good, he’d have died.

He wrote a book about the experience and the painful rehab. Pretty awful, and fortunate he got as much back as he did!

Good book.

How the hell is his brain damage not noticeable at all? He even appears physically in great shape.

Why does it not appear like that though? This happened in 2006. I’ve seen dozens of Top Gear episodes after that and it’s like he’s never missed a beat. He still seems decently intelligent.

I believe in his book it stated he had issues with memory, depression, and a hard time with emotions after the crash. Nothing really noticeable physically. I’m not sure if that was short term or still ongoing.

I think they hide it for the show a bit. And it affects him in some ways but not others. Maybe he recovered better than I know.

Well I sure couldn’t tell. He did great in the last 8 to 9 years of Top Gear. He even did some challenges that were fairly physical, and it appeared like he didn’t struggle.

And he has all his limbs, no giant scars, no noticeable difference from before the crash. He was upside down at 200 mph. I think that’s a great outcome.

Oh, well that’s not that bad. That is practically expected after being dragged upside down at 200 mph. Nothing I can notice physically, as the last 8-9 years of Top Gear had challenges that required physical movement and he performed them all fine. If the only side effects were a bit of depression and a hard time remembering, that is quite good in my book. There’s a million ways it could be worse.

Why didn’t he mention his coma on this episode? It’s a big deal.

He recovered fast according to the article I read. He was a little dulled in the 3 days after the crash, but was even moved to another hospital in just 6 days after. He could physically walk to the washroom 30 hrs after the crash (no coma). He was back on tv 2 weeks after the crash.

It is a great outcome and it’s great that he can still do what he’s doing.

There’s a quote in that article:

This week he told a British radio magazine the accident had plunged him into several years of “depression, obsession, compulsion and paranoia”.

“It was a lot to deal with. I had a pretty tricky few years,” Hammond said.

I was reading this one,

and this one,

They all seem to be a little conflicting

Go find and watch “Hammond meets Moss.” I won’t spoil it for you, but I found it to be an incredibly interesting piece of television.
